Scott and I (Sydney) see Century plants outside of Sedona, where we currently have our woodworking studio.

What is fascinating about the century plant is that it grows for about 20 years before it flowers.  After the plant flowers, it dies leaving behind multiple seeds.  The prickly, angular agave base gathers and stores up energy it's whole life and then produces this explosive display of floral beauty.

The red to yellow of the flowers creates a lovely contrast with the silver-greens and teals of the base of the plant. The stem of the flowering part of the plant and the tips of the agave leaves are a striking violet-sepia hue.  We have been really inspired by the spectacular glory of the century plant and it's amazing life cycle.

Scott and I painted the background sky like a storm we saw at Sunset Point, Arizona, in January 2019, with rolling grey-blue clouds lined with incandescent gold.

Scott carefully engraved the outline of the Century Plant making it pop from the wood panel.

This painting is mounted on two French cleats that hold it securely to the wall.
